Family support is crucial when it comes to quitting smoking especially if other family members are smokers themselves. To the non smoker reading this; in order to understand this better you have to put yourself in the shoes of a smoker who wants to quit. They usually are firm about their decision to quit, they do want to quit, but with cigarettes, ashtrays and lighters lying around it will be that much more difficult to do so.
Nicotine is an addiction, family support is like a ticket to quit smoking. Imagine this scenario, a now non smoker is surrounded by encouraging family members who use strong encouraging words to mentally support the now “x-smoker” and reward them on their achievements. The x-smoker when alone at one point in their effort to break free from smoking, will be faced with a situation where they will be tempted to have just one puff.
This one puff usually means back to becoming a smoker. During this tempting situation, the x-smoker will think of all the people who have encouraged and supported them. They will think of the efforts the family went through to reward this individual. When this happens, and in a do or die situation like this, the x-smoker will refuse and at this point they have so much confidence in themselves you can call them non-smokers.
The most important factor here is that the family shows love and care for the smoking individual. That’s all a smoker needs, just to know that there is someone who cares about them. The simple thought of letting these loved ones down will be enough to tackle any tempting situation in the future. This is why family support is so important in helping an individual quit smoking, it’s a guaranteed way to get a smoker to quit and stay quits.
Also a note to individuals who want to help someone quit, don’t bug them that they should quit. One thing you need to avoid is getting them upset and make them smoke more. Your part is to remind them that you care for them, and that you would be so much more pleased if they stopped. Show some love. Once they do decide to quit be encouraging and supportive.
If your a smoker, by now you should know that this is one of the best ways to quit smoking, so don’t be afraid to ask your family members for help and support, it makes you the wiser one. The following book is a great read. It will help you create a rich family environment and deepen the relationships you have with your loved ones, check it out…
